About The Artist Omar Obaid
Omar Obaid (b.1985) is an award-winning abstract artist based in London. After graduating with a BSc in Computer Science, Omar’s career took him on a different path where he formerly worked for The New York Times. Omar has now been a full-time independent artist painting professionally for over 14 years, and he enjoys creating large-scale expressive original oil and acrylic paintings in his studio in West London. In 2025, Omar won the Best Of Design Award in the Houzz Awards which over 3 million people voted in.
Omar's technique has been developing over the years, and mainly working with oil and acrylic paint on cotton canvas, Omar has created a signature colour palette which you can see throughout his collection.
Inspired by the modern masters including Rothko, Pollock and Kandinsky, Omar enjoys creating abstract paintings from layers of paint applied using a palette knife and adding the finishing touches with his signature mark-making techniques using varied brushes.
Omar’s artwork has appeared on TV in shows including Suits, Million Dollar Listing NYC and George Clarke’s Amazing Renovations. Omar’s work is held in public and private collections in over 35 countries including the UK, USA, Germany, Philippines and Australia. As well as producing new paintings to add to his collection, Omar works on large custom paintings and commissions with private and commercial clients across the world to create unique abstracts for home and office space. Omar was commissioned for Caesars Forum which hosts the world’s largest pillarless ballroom in Las Vegas, Champneys Spa and Tiktok’s London headquarters.

Artist Statement
As an abstract expressionist painter, I am drawn to the physical and emotional rhythms that shape everyday life. I see these rhythms in a sense like a visual pulse, echoed in the shifting tides, changing light, and emotional presence of the sea. My work is rooted in the energy of movement and atmosphere. Painting allows me to translate these emotions onto canvas into expansive abstract shapes and forms that are deeply reflective of my feelings at the time.
Working in large scale is essential to my process, allowing me to move freely and express myself without limits, so that gestural brush strokes, mark-making, and colour become extensions of my thoughts and feelings. Each painting evolves through layers of texture and movement, creating a surface that holds both intensity and stillness. I am interested in exploring how paintings can carry the rawness of emotion while remaining open and immersive, and this forms the basis of my practice.
Seascapes are a lasting source of inspiration, not as places to be depicted literally, but as emotional and spatial experiences. The sea suggests depth, calm, turbulence, and constant change. These qualities mirror the texture of life and the pace of the world around us. Through colour, scale, and gesture, I seek to evoke the sensation of being inside a moment rather than simply observing it.
My paintings are not fixed narratives. They are spaces for reflection, sensation, and connection. I want the viewer to encounter them physically as well as emotionally, to feel drawn into the movement and atmosphere and form a connection with my work.
Omar enjoys creating large artwork filled with movement and colour. His abstract work is inspired by everyday life. This can be seen in his artwork from the strong gestures and movements in his brush strokes.
About the artwork and process
Omar creates abstract paintings from many layers of paint which he applies using a brush, palette knife or made tools. After building up the layers, Omar adds details using his signature mark-making techniques and a variety of brushes.
All paintings are hand-made, originals and one of a kind. Created by Omar in his London studio. using high quality acrylic paints and hand stretched cotton canvas on wooden frames.
Each painting takes between a week to a few months to complete, depending on the foundation, inspiration and idea.
You can choose to add an additional outer solid wood frame (Floater frame) in either black, white, brown or oak to any of my paintings.

Original Abstract Paintings
I have been creating original abstract paintings professionally for 5 years now. Even though I started with portraits, something drew me to try abstract art and the moment I held the brush I knew that creating abstract art is the style that allows me to truly express what I want to say on canvas.
Most of my work has texture by applying many layers of colour to achieve the depth on canvas. I use various tools creating the abstract painting from palette knives to brushes in many sizes and forms.
The medium of choice is acrylic. I work with oils and other media including pastels and chalk but acrylic paints are my favourite simply because of the quick drying time and it has nice thickness for texture and layers.
The surface I prefer is cotton canvas. I use gallery quality canvas that has grains which you can touch and feel.
I stretch the canvas for my abstract painting on high quality wooden frames to ensure the painting lasts so you can enjoy it in your home for many years to come.
Interesting Facts
- The first painting Omar created is still available to view in his studio. He refused to sell it as it means more to him than the value, it is priceless.
- Even though Omar started painting and drawing portraits and figures, he needed a medium and style that he can express his thoughts freely and abstract was just perfect.
- Omar's favourite artists include Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso.
- Omar's work is held in private and commercial collections all around the world in over 50 countries including the UK, USA, Australia, UAE and Thailand.
